Recently, the IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS) announced the winners of the 2023 Prize Paper Award for its flagship journal, IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics (TPEL). From the 1,364 papers officially published in the journal in 2023, 5 first place prize papers, 9 second place prize papers and 2 prize letters were selected. The paper "A Transient Modeling-Based Grey-Box Method for Online Monitoring of DC-Link Capacitors" by Prof. He Zhengyou and Prof. Hu Haitao won the second prize of the 2023 Prize Paper Award.

The research focuses on the online condition monitoring of DC bus capacitors in power electronic converters. In this paper, it is found that the transient characteristics of the converter can be equivalent to the zero-state response of parallel RLC circuits, and a gray box monitoring method based on transient modeling and a new evaluation index of capacitor health state are proposed. The research results provide an innovative solution for the condition monitoring of energy storage components to support the predictive maintenance and safe operation of power electronic equipment.

It is reported that IEEE TPEL is the most influential academic journal in the field of international power electronics and one of the top SCI journals in the field of electrical engineering. The Prize Paper Award aims to recognize papers published by the journal with outstanding originality, high writing quality, and important potential application value in related fields. The award-winning papers need to go through multiple rounds of selection and voting by the review committee, and are recognized as the highest honor for academic papers in the field of international power electronics technology.
