In 1949, the Dept. of Electrical Engineering was founded, which has two specialties “Energy and Power” and “Telecommunications”.
In 1952, “Telecommunications” specialty was transferred, “Energy and Power” specialty stopped enrollment, but the nationwide first “Electric Transportation” specialty was set up.
In 1956, “Electric transportation” was divided into “Railway Power Supply” and “Electric Locomotive” 2 specialties.
In 1950-1960, the School had presided and fulfilled “The Study of 25kV Supply Power System of Chinese AC Electrified Railways” that was adopted as state standard. It also participated in the production of the first Chinese electric locomotive Model 6Y-1, presided and fulfilled the relay-less Tele-control device in electrified railways, and participated in the construction of the Baoji-Chengdu Railway line, the first electrified railway, and made a great contribution to the development of electrified railways and electric locomotives.
In 1959, the School began to provide Master’s Degree programs of “Power Supply of Electrified Railways”. “Electromagnetic Wave Theory”, “Electric Locomotive” and “DC (Pulse) Traction Motors”.
In 1977, the Dept. resumed enrollment normally.
In 1980, the Dept. of Electrical Engineering was renamed as Dept. of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science.
In 1981, Prof. Cao Jianyou was elected the Academy Member of Chinese Academy of Sciences, that is, the present Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences. The Dept. obtained the granting qualification of Doctorate Degree of “Railway Traction Electrification and Automation”.
In 1985, the Dept. of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science divided into the Dept. of Electrical Engineering and the Dept. of Computer Science and Applications.
In1987, “Railway Traction Electrification and Automation” was authorized as the State Key Discipline.
In 1988, a new specialty of “Applied Electronics Technology” was born.
In 1970-1980, the Dept. had presided in the study and supply of the first set of multi-microcomputer based SCADA system for electrified railways, testing car for overhead contact line, electric testing coach of substation, which were extensively introduced and applied to domestic electrified railways.
In 1991, the Dept. obtained the granting qualification of Master’s Degree of “Electrical Drives and Its Automation”.
In 1993, The School of Electrical Engineering was founded, based on the Dept. of Electrical Engineering.
In 1994, we presided in the production of the first trial car of 4-ton man-load maglev train in China.
In 1996, the project “Railway Traction Electrification and Automation” was launched, which was the subproject of the 1st Stage “National 211 Project”.
In 1997, Prof. Qian Qingquan was elected Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering.
In 1998, the Degree Committee of the State Council made some adjustments to the disciplines as follows: “Railway Traction Electrification and Automation” was divided into “Power System and Its Automation” and “Transportation Information Engineering & Control”, both obtained the authority of Doctorate Degree Granting and the latter being incorporated with the School of Computer Science; “Electrical Drives and Its Automation” was renamed as “Power Electronics & Electrical Drives” that obtained the authority of Doctorate Degree Granting. “System Engineering” and “Theory and New Technology of Electrical Engineering” were authorized Master’s Degree Granting. “Maglev Train and Magnetic Force Applies Engineering” was authorized as Sichuan Key Provincial Lab.
In 1999, the Post-doctoral R&D workstation of “Electrical Engineering” was set up. The School was authorized First-level Disciplines for Doctorate Degree Granting of “Electrical Engineering”, under which five Second-level Disciplines are included, that is, Electric Machines & Electric Apparatus, Power System and Its Automation, Power Electronics and Electric Drives, High Voltage and Insulation Technology, Theory and New Technology of Electrical Engineering. “Power Electronics and Electric Drives” was authorized Sichuan Key Provincial Discipline. “Power System and Its Automation” was approved to set up the Chair Professor by the Title of “Yangtze River Program”. “Railway Electrification and Automation” lab was authorized the Key Lab of the Ministry of Railways.
In 2000, “Power System and Its Automation” was authorized State Key Discipline. The School obtained the granting qualification of Master’s Degree of “Detection Technique and Automation Equipment”.
In 2002, we presided in the production of the first set of domestic “Traction Substation Safety Monitor and Integrated Automation System” that was extensively applied to domestic electrified railways. The project “Rail and Maglev Transportation Electrification and Automation” was launched, as the 2nd Stage of “National 211 Project”.
In 2003, the First-level Disciplines of “Electrical Engineering” set up three Second-level Disciplines with Doctorate Degree Granting, including Electromagnetic Levitation and Superconductive Engineering, Rail Transportation Electrification and Automation, Electric System Control & Information Technology. “Theory and New Technology of Electrical Engineering” was authorized Sichuan Key Provincial Discipline.
In 2005, both the scientific research result of “Packaged Technology of Traction Power Supply and Application Automation System” and the instructional result of “All-round Construction of Practical Instructional System to Enhance the Engineering Qualifications and Innovative Ability of Electrical Engineering Students” won the Second Prize of the State Scie-tech Progress Award and the Second Prize of the State Distinguished Instructional Results Award, respectively. “High Voltage Technique” was authorized China National Program for Elaborate Courses.
In 2006, the lab of “Magnetic Suspension Technique and Maglev Train” was authorized the Key Lab of the Ministry of Education. “Electrical Engineering and Its Automation” was authorized the Sichuan Provincial Characteristic Specialty.
In 2007, “Magnetic Suspension Technique and Maglev Train” innovation team was elected the Innovative Team of the Ministry of Education. The “Lab Center of Electrical Engineering” was authorized State Laboratory Instruction Demo Center. “Rail Transit Electrification and Automation” instructional team was elected the Sichuan Provincial Instructional Team, “Electrical Engineering and Its Automation” was authorized the State Characteristic Specialty Construction Site. “Power Traction Control System” was authorized China National Program for Elaborate Courses.
In 2008, the disciplines of Electrical Engineering and Control Science & Engineering were elected Sichuan Provincial Key Disciplines, Electrical Engineering and Its Automation was elected National Featured Specialty, the Instructional Team of Rail Transit Electrification and Automation was authorized State Instructional Team, Prof. Feng Xiaoyun was elected State Famous Teacher, Electrical Engineering and Its Automation passed the national engineering education professional programmatic accreditation by excellent achievement.
In 2009, “National Rail Transit Electrification and Automation Engineering Technique Research Center” was authorized to found by the Ministry of Science and Technology, “the Key Technique of High-voltage Electrical Equipment State Detection & Evaluation and Its Application” was conferred the First Prize of Sichuan Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award, “High-speed and Heavy-haul Train-Overhead Contact Line-Substation High-voltage Electrical Equipment Detection Technique and Equipment” was conferred the First Prize of Science and Technology Award of Chinese Railway Society, “Oriented National Vital Demand, Integrated Construction of Electrical Engineering Education System, Foster First-class Personnel of Rail Transit” was conferred the First Prize of State Teaching Award, “Relying on Dominant Discipline, Constructing Excellent Resources, Implementing the Cultivation of Diversification High Quality Professional Talents of Rail Transit” was conferred the Second Prize of State Teaching Award, both “Reforming The Training Patterns, Improving Research Ability, Fostering Innovation Talents of Rail Transit Electrification and Automation” and “Taking Scientific Idea As the Guide, Initiating the New Idea of the Combination of Experiment Teaching Popularized Education and Individualized Cultivation” were conferred the First Prize of Teaching Award of Sichuan Province, Holding the 60th Anniversary of the School.
In 2010, Electronic & Information Engineering was authorized the State Characteristic Specialty Construction Site, “SCADA System” was authorized China National Program for Elaborate Courses, Prof, Wu Guangning was elected Sichuan Provincial Famous Teacher.
In 2011, Prof, Chen Weirong was elected Sichuan Provincial Famous Teacher.
In 2012, China's first low-speed maglev train, whose core technology of suspension control is provided by the Southwest Jiaotong University, is put into operation; Academician Ding Rongjun is appointed as the honorary professor of our school; National Science and Technology Award Evaluation Committee completed the review and the "Safe Operation Testing and Application of the Key Equipment of Traction Power Supply " is honored as the second prize of 2012 National Science and Technology Progress Award, which is achieved by Wu Guangning, Gao ShiBin etc. Chengdu Jiaoda Guangmang Industry CO.,LTD and Southwest Jiaotong University completed the "Passenger Power Integrated SCADA System" in cooperation; The communist party of China in Southwest jiaotong university institute of electrical engineering held the first congress successfully.
In 2013, Our school successfully developed China's first electric locomotive hydrogen fuel cell; "High speed railway power supply integrated monitoring technology and equipment" project is recommended as the first prize of national scientific and technological progress.
