Introduction
1. Overview
In China, high school students take the National College Admission Test (NCAT), and then choose the university and the major according to their scores. In recent years there have been over 10,000,000 students annually taking the NCAT. About 6,500,000 students will be enrolled by universities. School of Electrical Engineering in SWJTU recruits 400 to 500 students each year. The enrolling NCAT scores of undergraduates for School of Electrical Engineering are always higher than most schools and departments in Southwest Jiaotong University during recent 5 years.
School of Electrical Engineering launches 3 kinds of undergraduate programs: Electrical Engineering and Automation, Electric Information Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Intelligent Control. As one of the six majors in China, it has remarkably passed the National Engineering Education Professional Certification in 2008 and 2014, respectively.
2. History of Undergraduate Program
2.1 Electrical Engineering and Automation
In July 1949, the first Department of Electrical Engineering was set in Tangshan Engineering Institute of China Jiaotong University. In 1952, the first discipline of electrical transport was established by Prof. Cao Jianyou, an academician the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 1962, the discipline of Electric Transportation was divided into 2 disciplines of Electrified Railway Power Supply and Electric Locomotive. In 1981, "Electrified Railway Power Supply" was renamed "Railway Electrification". In 1985, "Electric Locomotive" was renamed "Power Traction and Transmission Control". In 1996, with the development of national education teaching reform, according to the categories of cultivation, the two majors of "Railway Electrification" and "Electric Traction and Drive Control" were included in the discipline of "Electrical Engineering and Its Automation". At present this discipline consists of four majors, "Rail Transit Automation and Power Supply", "Power System and Its Automation", "Power Electronics and Drive Control", "Urban Rail and Maglev Electrification".
The discipline undertakes a large number of national undergraduate teaching quality and reform projects. It was entitled as the first batch of “National Characteristic Specialty” in 2007, “the first batch of National Excellent Engineer Training Program” in 2011, the first round of National Major Comprehensive Reform - National Key Major Program in 2012. It got many national and provincial teaching awards including the first and second prize of national teaching achievements with the construction of State Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center", "National Engineering Practice Education Center" and other teaching bases.
2.2 Electronic Information Engineering
This major is supported by the School of Electrical Engineering (formerly known as the Electrical System Department in July 1949). In 1986, with the aim of "cultivating information talents in line with the development of Electrical Engineering, Prof. Qian qingquan (Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1997) led to found the discipline of Applied Electronic Technology, and began to recruite students in 1988. During the time, professor Jin Fan, a famous information science expert, started the discipline of Information Engineering. In 1999, with discipline adjustment, the two majors of Applied Electronic Technology and Information Engineering developed into the discipline of Electronic Information Engineering.
2.3 Electrical Engineering and Intelligent Control
The undergraduate program of Electrical Engineering and Intelligent Control is new program, found in 2017. Undergraduate students will study in Emei Campus in the first three years, and study in Xipu Campus during the fourth years in Southwest Jiaotong University.
